Am I Too Young to do P90X?

28 November 2009 49 Comments

The P90X program seems to be spreading like wild fire across the US, even among teenagers. Recently, the number of young people that have approached me about the program has been increasing. There is no doubt that it’s good to start working out and eating healthy during the teenage years, but what age is too young to do an intense program like P90X?

The cut-off age for P90X should be 14 years old. Why? Most boys hit puberty at 13 years old, and at that time their muscles and bones are still not quite developed. However, when people say that weight lifting stunts your growth, it’s actually a myth. The theory behind the myth is because, like I mentioned above, most childrens’ bones aren’t completely developed at that age, and they have growth plates at the end of most bones, which are more fragile than other bones. The reason I believe P90X should not be done at that age is because of the extreme intensity, not the weight lifting aspect. Weightlifitng will not effect the growth as long as there is no injury to the growth plate, but with the proper safety precautions and measures, that should not happen. What are the safety measures?

(1) Make sure you have a spotter when lifting heavy weights. It’s never safe for anyone, let alone young teenagers, to lift heavy weights without someone there to help.

(2) Focus on proper technique. Many injuries from weightlifting come from using the wrong technique during the exercises. When doing P90X, make sure you pay close attention to Tony’s form. When doing regular weight lifting, make sure you ask someone who knows or do research on the internet for proper technique.

(3) Always warm-up before working out. When you warm up the muscles, they loosen up and are able to expand further than if they were cold. This helps prevent pulled muscles.

Other benefits of P90X for teenagers:

I believe P90X is great for teenagers who are in sports. The reason being is because it increases athletic performance by improving your balance, strength, flexibility, core strength, and quickness. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have done this program in high school if it was around back then.

I’m 15 years old and have been doing P90X for two days. I’m an athlete, so it’s challenging, but not enough to make me feel like I should call an ambulance. My one main question is if I should follow the diet. I haven’t been following it because I assumed that it was meant for older people (20 and up) who don’t burn calories as fast as they used to. However, I still eat regular healthy meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and stay active by not just doing the P90X, but sport activities 4 times a week. What do you suggest I should do? Also, would you be able to recommend what I should eat after a workout for P90X? I’m always starving after the workout and I don’t take the supplements and usually snack on vegetables and fruits.

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey! Following a healthy diet is important for anyone no matter what the age. However, because you’re so young, you are going to want to talk to your doc and see if following the Nutrition Guide would be good for you. Also, make sure that you eat after your workout!

I’m 15 about 5′7-5′9 im not sure, and weight 139. I tried P90X for a while and liked it a lot, the muscle confusion and all, but I was wondering if I could use the the health drink. I didn’t know if there was an age limit or something.

You need to check with your doctor before beginning any supplement, especially at your age.

if you skip one day can you do doubles the next?

  • Josh (author) said:

Yeah, but I wouldn’t get into the habit of skipping a day!

I am 14 and getting P90x in three days from now and I have been going to a gym for three months and this has not ruined my growth at all (grew half of a inch. Right now I’m 5′10″ and 140 pounds, I have been getting about 2750-3000+ calories each day for a while now for bulking up (helps a lot). So I do not think I will be sticking with the diet they supply and keep my own because of my age. Yes I have been taking the supplements.

  • Josh (author) said:

Weightlifting causing stunted growth is actually a myth. Because of your age, it’s going to be important that you eat a LOT of food!

does p90x work for a kid like me? i am 13 but pretty athletic i have good stamina and have been doing p90x for 5 days now. i do the ab ripperx workout every other day. the first time i did ab ripper x i was soar for 2 days but now when i do it i am only hurting while i do it but not the next day im not soar at all is this ok? i do the best i can too. i just did the yoga one and had no balance at all so i just took like 5 second breaks and tried to do it again. i am not doing the nutrition plan thing but i am eating healthier. i am about 5 feet tall and i weighed like 115 pounds when i started. i know its probably not that much but alot of it was fat because i used to weigh 100 like 2 months ago and i was happy with my weight and size but now i am bigger and have much more fat. plz tell me if p90x will work like it says it will and if it would be ok for me. btw even if it is puberty i want to be able to have abs right now.

I’m 15 years old (girl), 5′ 4” and 148 lbs. I want to lose about 35 lbs. My mom and step dad are both doing P90X, and my real dad has already done it ^^ My mom is about a week and a half into the program, and I was wondering if I could just start doing the workouts with her or if I should start the program from the beginning by myself? Also, do I have to follow the nutrition plan? :P Usually I have a banana for breakfast, some fruit and a PB&J sandwich for lunch and then whatever my mom cooks for dinner (it’s usually very healthy). And a small piece of chocolate around 2-3 PM. The only thing I’m truely concerned about is that my mom is really sore after doing the workouts, and I have to start band camp in a few weeks which means two 3 hour sessions of walking around outside almost everyday. Would this be too much for my body to handle? =\

  • Josh (author) said:

@Ashleigh. First of all, I’m very glad to hear that you’re going to go through the program at your age. I wish I would have committed to a healthy lifestyle back then. Anyways, if I were you I would start from the beginning, and yes, you need to follow the Nutrition Guide, well at least the guidelines. You don’t have to eat the exact foods, but eat ones that are similar in nutritional value to the one’s listed. Also, there is no going around it, you’re going to be sore! Whether you start now or after camp is completely up to you!

Also, you and your parents should make me your coaches so I can be here to help you guys through the program and answer any questions that you may have. It’s free to do so, and here’s the link: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/47458

Hey Josh. I am 5 foot 8 15 year old basketball player. I weigh around 130 pounds. Should I go to the Level 1 or Level 2 because I don’t know if it is safe if I restricted my caloric intake from about 2600-3000 to 1800-2400.

  • Josh (author) said:

    @Petey. Stick with Level 2.

  • Josh (author) said:

@Carson. Yeah, P90X is an excellent program for you, and I’ve found more and more teenagers are starting to use it. However, since you’re young, you still want to check with your doctor and make sure he approves.

If you are going to purchase the program, you can actually do so through this site, which will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help you through the program. Let me know if you have other questions bud.

Hi im 15, pretty athletic, i am strong, i wrestle, but my diet isnt that good. So im thinking about starting the p90x. but i have couple of questions. you know the resistance bands? on of the handles came out and i was wondering if the other would do the same in exercise and maybe whack me in face? stupid question i know. And the supplements, i dont have those or dont think i can buy them at my country, american products are pretty rare here and if i wanted to ship it here id have to cut off an arm and a leg, so any other home made solutions to that??

  • Josh (author) said:

@Faris. It sounds to me like you don’t have the handles on there properly. Also, don’t know of any good substitutes for the supplements. Sorry.

  • Josh (author) said:

@Jason. Yeah, P90X will help you lose the body fat. You have to make sure you commit yourself to both the diet and the workouts, though, if you want excellent results. Also, unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do with loose skin.

Also, if you decide to purchase the program, you can do so from this site, which will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help support, motivate, and answer any questions that you may have.

Hey Josh, I was thinking about using P90x, I lift weights alot and gianed about 12lbs since I’ve been working out. But I was wondering if I would always loose weight using p90x because i’m 5′6 and weight 120 lbs, and was hopeing to gain muscle weight. Would P90x diet do that?

  • Josh (author) said:

@Desmond. You can find out what I did to gain mass with the program by typing in “gain mass with P90X” in the search box. You will find 3 posts called just that.

  • Colby said:

Hey josh im 15 and about 130 lbs im trying to gain some muscle mass and a good strong core along with some big strong arms…..i would also like to increase my agility and quickness since I will be a wide receiver this year on my highschool football team. Do u think p90x is for me… is it safe for me???

  • Josh (author) said:

@Colby. Yeah bud, I’ve seen many teenagers go through the program and get awesome results. However, you need to make sure it’s OK with your doctor before beginning an extreme program like P90X. If he OK’s you, I have the program available for purchase on this site. By doing so, you will get 2 extra workouts and I will also become your coach.

Hey Josh, I drink a cup of coffee with about 30 grams of sugar in the morning. I want to start the program, but I cannot go through the day without my coffee. What should I do?

  • Josh (author) said:

@Eric. Use artificial sweetener. I put 3 Splenda packets in my coffee and I’m good to go.

  • Austin said:

Hey Josh, im 14 years old and ive recently got a gym membership and going about 4 times a week. i have done a PHP and im in excellent shape, but i still want to gain strength. I do competitive running which is good, but i still dont want to be really skinny and i want to have strong, defined muscles. I was wondering if i should just stick to the gym or do a P90X. Also, if i got it, is it good to do other excercise while in the P90X. i run hard intervals about 4 times a week, and im wondering if i got it should i keep doing it or just stay with the P90X. I think i could do it but the people at the gym have said not to work out to much, mainly because your muscles need to reform after a workout. Sorry for the long comment.
    Thanks, Austin

  • Josh (author) said:

@Austin. I used to go to the gym every day for 4 years while in college, and I got better results in 40 days with P90X, so yeah, I think P90X is an excellent program for you. You can add in some additional training if you’d like, but it’s not necessary.
