My Grocery List!

24 September 2009 58 Comments

As most of you know, I used the P90X program and Nutrition Guide to get into excellent shape. However, the Nutrition Guide contained some foods that I don’t really care for, so I decided to purchase substitutes that contained the same nutritional value.

I decided to post my grocery list so that next time you go to the store, you can shop like me! I usually shop at Wal-Mart, which seems to be the cheapest, and get the Great Value (GV) brand (Wal-Mart generic) for most products. This is for 1 month of supplies for 2 people!

  1. 2 packages of Strawberries
  2. GV Fat-free whipped cream
  3. 3 Packages of Thomas Whole Wheat English Muffins
  4. 1 Loaf of Nature’s Pride Whole Grain Bread
  5. 2 jars of Simply JIF Peanut Butter
  6. 1 jar of GV Green Olives
  7. 3 boxes of cereal: GV Toasted Oats, Kix, Product 19
  8. GV sugar-free water flavoring
  9. 2 bottles of GV Ketchup
  10. 1 package GV Beef Jerky
  11. Large pack of Whole Grain Crackers with Cheese
  12. 2 bottles of Juicy Juice Natural Fruit Juice
  13. 5 dozen Large Eggs
  14. 1 gallon GV Fat-Free Milk
  15. 3 Fat-Free GV Cottage Cheese
  16. 8 packages of GV Sugar Free Jello
  17. 2 packages of Borden Fat-Free American Cheese
  18. 3 Large packages of GV vegetables: Mixed Veggies, Corn, and Broccolli
  19. 2 packages Ego Whole Grain Low Fat Waffles
  20. 1 package Weight Watchers Low Fat String Cheese
  21. 1 package of Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage
  22. 1 package Butterball Turkey Bacon
  23. 2 packages Whole Grain Wraps
  24. 1 package GV Fat-Free Cream Cheese
  25. 1 package Oscar Meyer Turkey Dogs
  26. 2 packages Pork Chops
  27. 5 packages GV Frozen Chicken Breasts
  28. 5 lbs of 93/7 Ground Beef
  29. 2 lbs Butterball Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
  30. 5 cans of GV Tuna
  31. 2 GV 400 packets Sweeteners
  32. 2 packages Dole Romaine Lettuce
  33. GV Whole Wheat Pasta
  34. 1 jar GV Italian Garden Combination Pasta Sauce
  35. 1 bottle Kraft Fat-Free Ceasar Italian Dressing
  36. 1 can GV 100% Arabica Coffee
  37. Coffeemate Sugar-Free Hazelnut/French Vanilla Creamer
  38. Kraft Fat-Free Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  39. GV Fat-Free Grated Parmesan Cheese
  40. 5th Season Seasonings

The total for all this usually comes to about $200!

Hey Josh, I see that you buy 93/7 ground beef and was wondering what kind of meals you prepare using the meat? Thanks and great work!

  • Josh (author) said:

I usually grill burgers, make whole wheat wraps, or sloppy joe with that meat.

  • Adam said:

I can’t stand cottage cheese or broccoli, what do you recommend as replacements?

  • eric said:

hello Josh i am new to this but can you give me an idea of what kind of stuff to make and how much to eat daily etc… i am buying exactly what you have soo yeah please help me

    thank you…

If you look in the Nutrition Guide, there are recipes to follow. Also, if you sign up to be a Club Member you can get personalized meal plans as well.

  • Josh (author) said:

With cottage cheese, you can substitute it with another protein product like reduced fat string cheese. You can replace broccoli with just about any vegetable.

How much creamer do you put in your cup of coffee? How many cups do you have a day? Any sugar with your coffee?

  • Josh (author) said:

I usually put a TBS of sugar-free creamer in each cup, and usually have 2-3 cups per day. I don’t put any sugar in it, but do use artificial sweetener.

  • Raymond said:

Thank you so much for posting this! My wife and I eat out ALOT so this eating healthy thing is a big change for me and my wife. So this is a BIG help for us.

  • Josh (author) said:

I’m glad it helped! I used to eat out all the time as well, but when I began P90X I knew that had to change because of how unhealthy it is to do so.

  • Samantha said:

I wanted to know if it’s okay to eat a lowfat TV dinner like lean lean cuisine or weight watchers?

  • Josh (author) said:

There were times that I would eat those when going through my first round of the X. I don’t have a problem with them at all. However, some aren’t as healthy as you think, so make sure you check the nutrition info before you purchase.

  • Samantha said:

What do I need to look out for when I purchase them? Which ones do you really recommend?

  • Isaac said:

Hey Josh what do u usually Eat for breakfast , lunch and dinner just a quick rundown??.Cause i wouldn’t mind eating the same thing for 90 days…haha..

  • Josh (author) said:

You can actually find that information on this site under the “My Diet” section.

  • Jack said:

Hey Josh I looked at your diet, but I would like to know portions as well to help out so Im not over eating. Also would like to thank you for telling us your grocery list and rough price. I have seen the nutrition plan thought it looked like I would be spending a lot of money. Keep up the good work.

  • Josh (author) said:

I will try to make a post about my portions soon.

  • josh said:

thank you so much for making this website and actually taking the time to answer our question its making our lives a whole easier, thanks for all of your help.

  • Josh (author) said:

No problem! I’m glad I can help!

  • Jameel said:

Hey I wanted to know do you drink protein shakes everyday or just on your workout days?

  • Josh (author) said:

I usually take the shakes every day.

  • Gillian said:

Hi Josh- you look AWESOME!! I was just checking your site out, and it is wonderful, too! I am really serious now about getting that P90X program. I know too many people who are cross training, not to.

Quick question- There is a lot of meat in your grocery list. Do you have an alternative list for someone who is a vegetarian? Not that I am one, but there is a family history of heart disease, and I know that diet has a lot to do with that, so I try to keep my meats to a minimum, and have increased on the fruits and vegetables to avoid empty starches.

Do you have any tips there? Thanks, sexy!!! You are so hot, by the way!!

  • Josh (author) said:

Haha thanks! I actually have not created a list for vegetarians yet because nobody has really asked me to do so. Heart disease has a lot to do with obesity, and of course diet has everything to do with that. However, meat really isn’t too bad if you’re eating the right types, like lean chicken, beef, etc. Also, be careful with how many fruits and veggies you take in because they are high in carbs, which isn’t good if you’re looking to lose weight and body fat. Make sure you browse through the diet section on my blog for great tips.

  • tyler said:

could u give a sample of what you eat in a week?

  • Josh (author) said:

You can find sample diets of mine in the “My Diet” section of this site.

  • bob said:

one gallon of milk for an entire month? I am used to drinking a gallon every 2 or 3 days…am I going to have to stop drinking milk or what?

  • Josh (author) said:

I don’t go through much milk because I don’t eat much cereal. Milk is good for you, though, so you won’t need to stop drinking it.

  • Anthony said:

I just found this site and am thoroughly impressed with it. the organization is great and the user doesnt feel overwhelmed by ads and extras. the descriptions are great (only thing i noticed is it would be cool to have descriptions of workouts and fitness outside of p90x). if you dont mind the question, how much moeny does a website like this make you per month?

  • Josh (author) said:

I don’t like to disclose the amount of money that I bring in from this site, but it’s enough to make coaching a full-time job.

  • Nick said:

hey josh great work.. i said a few weeks ago that i was going to start p90x and because of some complications im just getting to start it today the 10th im going to buy all the food on your list but is this for everything in the nutrition book or your custom meal plan on beachbody.com

  • Nick said:

is this for the nutrition book or ure personal diet

  • Josh (author) said:

You can use it with the Nutrition Guide by making sure you follow the proper ratios.

  • dee said:

what are some of ur basic recipes that u do that doesnt take a lot of time preparing from ur food list, like what is a typical food day. thanks

  • Steve said:

I’m printing this out right now lol!!

So, Josh, how many calories would you say two good size boneless chicken breasts are? I am on the fat shredder (and probably will do this for the first 2 phases) and I just dont want to eat too much chicken thinking that its packed with protein… I basically love on chicken, and I’m bad with measuring food.. any help would be appreciated.

  • Josh (author) said:

I actually have already posted sample diets of mine in the “Nutrition” and “My Diet” sections.

  • Josh (author) said:

I don’t know how many calories it has, and you would have to look on the bag for that. Also, chicken is very high in protein and not very high in fat, so it’s a good food to eat.

  • Matt said:

Josh, congrats on your results. I am in my 3rd week of the classic p90x workout. I have been slacking on the diet portion, I don’t eat junk – I just haven’t measured portions or counted calories, I just didn’t buy into the diet side of it until I started reading your posts. 2 questions, is alcohol in moderation ok? For example, I usually have 1 to 2 beers a night a few nights a week. Second question, I have a horrible sweet tooth and usually crave a dessert after lunch or dinner, did you have that problem and how did you deal with it? Thanks and keep up the hard work.

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s alright to drink every once in a while. I usually have a few drinks each weekend, but it’s important that you don’t go overboard. Stick with the “lighter” drinks like light beer or rum and diet coke’s. Also, I think everyone has a sweet tooth, and you just have to be strong enough to resist temptations. A fruit is a good substitute for sweets. Also, click on the link to make me your coach if you haven’t already: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/11685

I usually work out right away in the morning around 6 before I do anything else. Is it ok that I’m not eating anything until after my workout? I usually eat around 8 and then have my 5 meals timed out 3 hours apart throughout the rest of my day. Thanks for the help!

  • Josh (author) said:

Yeah, that’s fine if you don’t eat until after your workout. Sometimes it’s just too early to eat breakfast! You don’t want to eat and then cramp up because you worked out too early.

  • Josh said:

Josh, quick question, is this grocery list for the P90x Fat Shredder?

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s just my grocery list, but yes, you can use it with the Fat Shredder. I highly recommend becoming a Club Member if you need help creating meal plans. Learn more about it here: http://www.iwanttogetripped.com/get-fit/club-membership/

    Hey Josh,
I was just wondering. I’m 5′11″ and I weight about 230 lbs and I want to lose fat. I’ve been weight lifting for about 3 years now and I have a nice amount of muscle on me but I really want to see them. Im going to stick to the fat shredder percentages but I feel 3000 calories is way to much to lose fat. Should I stick with that or should I go with less? I was thinking around about 2200 calories. I really feel 3000 is way too much.

  • Josh (author) said:

3,000 is way too many calories if you’re looking to lose weight/fat. You need to be more around 2,200 cals per day according to your height and weight. Also, look into the Club Membership, which gives you access to trainer tips, healthy recipes, and creates custom meal plans for you. There are many other benefits as well, and you can learn more by clicking on this link: http://www.iwanttogetripped.com/get-fit/club-membership/. Being a Club Member helped me tremendously when I first started the program.

    Josh,

What phase is this shopping list best for?

  • Josh (author) said:

This is the shopping list I use with each phase.

  • Jorge Castro said:

Hey, I was just wondering something. I’ve decided to start my diet and eat healthier foods, so what I did was cut out as much unnecessary fats and sweets out of anything that I eat. However, I read something on your forum earlier thats said I need a certain percantage of fats carbs and proteins in my diet accordingly to P90X, but I don’t know how I could calculate that being as I’m only 15 years old. So is it okay if I have minimal fats, and then mostly carbs and protein? If not what could I do?

You have to log what you eat into http://www.fitday.com.

  • Rudy said:

Hey Josh I got my free account for fitday but I’m quite confused on how to use it can you help me please

  • Josh (author) said:

@Rudy. You just log what you eat into it man. You can use http://www.myfitnesspal.com, which is a little easier.

  • dom said:

do you only go food shopping one a month? do you freeze most of the food to keep it from going bad?

  • Josh (author) said:

@Dom. We go shopping a couple times per month, and yeah, we will freeze some foods so that they don’t go back, like bagels.
