P90X or Insanity?

4 March 2010 64 Comments

For the past few weeks, I have had a number of people email me and ask whether or not they should start out with P90X or Insanity. Both are excellent programs and will help you get into great shape, but what is the difference between the two? Is one more intense than the other? Will you build more mass with P90X? Will you lose muscle mass with Insanity? Let’s look at my P90X Review and Insanity Review below.

P90X is what I started out with, and one that I recommend to everyone because of how much I believe the program works! I got amazing P90X results, and if you haven’t seen my P90X before and after photos yet, click here. The one thing that I really like about P90X is that it involves a balance of resistance and cardio training. I ended up losing 25lbs and 10% body fat during my first round of the program. During the second round, I had a new goal to gain mass with P90X, and that’s exactly what I did. I ended up putting back on 15lbs of muscle without gaining body fat! Whether your goal is to gain mass or lose weight, P90X is an excellent program that will help you reach those goals! If you want to read my complete P90X Review, click here.

What about Insanity? Whenever people get through one or two rounds of P90X, they look for a program that will spice up their workouts, and that’s exactly what Insanity does! Warning, Insanity is SUPER INTENSE! There are some workouts that you will burn over a 1,000 calories in an hour, so this isn’t for beginners! You have to already be in decent shape to start this program. Insanity has both cardio and resistance workouts, but the resistance workouts involve only body weight, so if you’re looking to gain mass only, then Insanity wouldn’t be for you. However, if you’re looking to get cut and ripped, Insanity will help you burn the fat and reach your goals! Also, if you have knee or back problems, then you probably need to stay away from Insanity because of all the jumping around that’s involved. I like doing the Insanity cardio workouts and P90X resistance workouts, just so I have a balance of heavy resistance training and high intensity cardio training. I’ve seen on facebook some people saying Insanity really takes a toll on your knees, ankles, and back like you said. Can’t go wrong with good ‘ol P90X.

I feel like i should have gone with INSANITY now. But after spending money on p90x there is no way i could convince my husband of that. I have gotten some results with p90x but there isnt enough cardio. Im doing the lean program. Do you recomend that i add my own cardio such as running or should i take the leap and purchase insanity. I want toned ABS =) Great post and reviews

  • Josh (author) said:

Haha yeah man! P90X is ROCKIN!

  • Josh (author) said:

You might want to look into the Doubles version, which involves 2 workouts. You have to understand that it’s good for women to do resistance training as well to speed up the metabolism and lose fat! My fiance went through the Classic version and got excellent results!

heyy i just ordered p90x as a work out system i am18 6′3″ and 225 lbs wat kinda results should i expect and also wat do i need to help increase my results

  • Josh (author) said:

Did you order the program from this site? If you can commit yourself 100% to both the diet and the workouts, you will see results! Also, make sure you check out the “Q&A” section, which has a ton of information to help you get started.

I’ve done one round of P90X and I lost about 10 lbs and now I’m down to 9% body fat (5′10 160 lbs). Now my goal is to get down to around 6% body fat, so I’m considering doing Insanity next. My question is, will I lose muscle mass just doing Insanity? I don’t have enough time to do both Insanity and a P90X resistance routine in one day… I have one hour max to workout per day. I want to maintain the same muscle mass I have now, but I’m afraid if I just do Insanity that, yes, I’ll get ripped/toned, but I will also get really skinny. And I don’t want to get really skinny. I’m really trying to lose the last layer of fat around my mid-section, and I don’t think I’m going to quite get there with P90X once a day, which is why I want to try Insanity. I don’t know, maybe I can’t have it both ways, but hopefully you can tell me I’ll only lose fat and I won’t lose muscle mass just doing Insanity. Let me know what you think!

  • Josh (author) said:

Congrats man! If you’re following the proper diet and using the right supplements, you won’t have a problem with losing too much muscle mass with Insanity. You can purchase the program from this site, and doing so will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help you through the program. Also, have you thought about becoming a coach now that you have finished a round? Let me know and I’ll get you more information!

  • Sam said:

Thanks for the comments Josh! BTW – congrats to you to and excellent work, you’re definitely an inspiration to all of us.

    I don’t have Insanity yet but I’ll give you a holler if/when I do.

    Thanks again!

First off, I just have to say that your before and after photos are incredible. I’m still fairly new in terms of learning about p90x and insanity and have been trying to decide which one I want to go with. My goal is to burn body fat and go for a leaner and more trimmed physique, so would this be better obtained through Insanity?

Also, I have been considering Insanity more for some time now, but I am a bit skeptical about one thing. I understand that it requires alot of will power as well as physical endurance, but when you say that it is not for beginners, I’m not sure if I fall into that category or not. While I am not in the best shape of my life or even great for that matter, I work out regularly for the most part and know how to test my limits. Would you say Insanity requires more physical endurance or greater will power?

Thanks for making these reviews as I have been unsure whether or not these programs were genuine. Any advice or suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

  • Josh (author) said:

Thanks man! OK, Insanity does require greater will power and determination because you really, really have to push yourself to the max with this workout! However, you have to do the same with P90X, but not to the extent you do as with Insanity. I like P90X because there is a balance between cardio and resistance training, and you use weights. With Insanity, you use just your body weight. You can actually purchase either program from this site, and doing so will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help you through the program!

I am 151 lbs and am 5′ 10″ and I started the X one week ago and was just wondering if I will bulk up after 3 months of doing the X or if I will have to go more then just one round of the X to get the results Im lookin for if anyone can help please let me know!

  • Josh (author) said:

It all depends on what your goals are and how well you commit yourself to both the workouts and the diet. It might take you anywhere from 1-3 rounds to reach your goals.

    hi Josh,

great website with a lot of good info.

I’m on the fence in the p90x vs. Insanity debate and was hoping you could help further. To give you a quick background:

I’m 29 years old and played competitive sports in college. I’m 6′2″, and my previous playing weight was around 200 lbs or so. Over the past 7 years I’ve packed on another 60+. Looking back at pictures, I didn’t like the way I looked at 200 lbs, too skinny looking. In the offseason I usually bulked up to around a muscular 215 and felt this was a good weight/look for me.

I guess what I’m looking for is to shed 40+ lbs, yet still have a good amount of muscle mass. From what I’ve been reading that would lean towards p90x? Also, I’ve got a history of ankle injuries from sports (and one knee isn’t so great either).

So maybe I’m answering my own question here, but which program would you recommend? Thanks.

  • Junior said:

also, following up to my last comment, what are your thoughts on taking something like Hydroxycut while doing the p90x/Insanity program?

  • Josh (author) said:

I’m not a big fan of Hydroxycut nor recommend it.

  • Josh (author) said:

Thanks bro! Yeah, P90X is a great program, especially for someone with an athletic background. Muscle memory kicks in and allows you to see quicker results than someone who has never lifted before. Follow the P90X Classic version. You can purchase the program from this site, and doing so will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help you through the program.

  • adriana said:

Hi, Great reasults :-) I weight about 200lbs but and was wondering if I should start with p90X i dont want to get bulky I jsut want to get rid of this fat.

  • Josh (author) said:

Yes! P90X is the best program that I have come across and one that I highly recommend! You can purchase it from this site, and doing so will make me your coach and I’ll be here to help you through the program.

  • adriana said:

thank you soooo much for you’re quick response Josh, I actually bought the program last year from beachbody and I was at around 160lbs I was on wk 3 and my Daddy passed, I lost motivation and eveything else and gained 40 lbs now a year later I want to get back on track!

  • adriana said:

sorry to ask again but which one would you recommend for me to do, doubles? classic or lean I am going on a trip in about 3 months and I want the best results :-)

  • Josh (author) said:

    Classic!

  • Josh (author) said:

Sorry to hear about your father. Now it’s time to get back into shape..

  • James said:

Hey Josh, I’ve always had a hard time gaining weight, until recently when I started eating more and lifting weights. I weigh 185, which is the heaviest I have ever been. I like my size, I’m 6′1 so I still look slim, the only problem is that I have a gut. I just started the p90x program this week and love it so far. But, I don’t want to lose alot of weight, only about 8-10 lbs to get rid of this gut and tone up a bit. I’m worried that since Phase 1 only allows a limited amount of carbs that all of the excessive cardio will start to target the muscle that I do have, since I have a low % of body fat (excluding my stomach). Would it be okay to take in more complex carbs during phase 1, so that the cardio doesn’t eat away my muscles?

  • Josh (author) said:

If you follow the Nutrition Guide, then you shouldn’t lose muscle mass. You are going to want to follow the lower carbs to get rid of the body fat.

  • Donna said:

I’m 45 female, 6′, 160. I was very thin and athletic until about my late 30s but I haven’t exercised regularly since then. I’d like to get in shape by mid-August. I like the looks of the P90X but I’m wondering if there’s anything else you’d recommend? I saw the ads last night for Winsor Pilates. Motivation and time are definitely factors.

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey Donna! If you struggle with motivation issues, then you will never succeed with getting into excellent shape. It involves 100% commit to both diet and workouts for any workout program! The one great thing about purchasing P90X is that you will have me as a coach, and I will do my best to support and motivate you through the program, which helps tremendously. You can purchase the program here on this site!

  • Jerel said:

I gotta hand it to you dude, by looking at your pictures, you can make a straight guy go gay lol..jk..Take it as a compliment, I ain’t gay, but I am jealous and want what you have now. I’m a runner and I can run distance without resting or walking but i do slow down at some point, one question do is it ok to use one disc from each work out that’s equilvalent to each day, I mean like if you do one work out for P90X, and do one from insanity the next day?

  • Josh (author) said:

Yeah, you can create some sort of hybrid P90X/Insanity workout, and that’s actually what I’ev been doing with P90X/One on One/P90X Plus. Also, have you made me your coach yet? If not you can do so by clicking on this link: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/11685

Awesome man! Nice to meet you and get ready to BRING IT!

  • brockfs1 said:

hey josh i was wondering if there is a way to get cheap to almost free quick shipping from ur site?

  • brockfs1 said:

NM bro i got it figured out… im Buying the Peak Package today most likely… just gotta check the bank account! lol

  • Josh (author) said:

My site actually forwards to the Beachbody site, but with my coach ID number in the back of the link for me to get the credit, so the shipping is whatever Beachbody has available.

  • lBeez said:

Is this site owned or sponsored by Beach body fitness? seems like it

  • Josh (author) said:

Actually it’s not. This is a site that I have created entirely on my own and own the rights to.

  • Gabriel said:

    hey Josh,

Just needed your help which program i should use between p90x and insanity?

i play college baseball and im a freshmen. im 5′10, 190lbs. and i want to lose fat then get not too ripped but fit and stronger at the same time.

which would you recommend for me?

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey man! I actually recommend P90X over Insanity because it contains more of a balance of cardio and resistance. I actually played college baseball as well, and I really wish I would have known about P90X back then. Also, if you purchase the program from this site, I will become your coach and be here to help you through the program. Let me know if you have other questions.

  • Gabriel said:

Yea bro im planning on doing it, i just wanted to make sure if it really works 100% because i wouldn’t want to waste that amount of money on something that does not work.

  • Gabriel said:

And i see that its working out 6 days a week.. As for the workouts, does it matter what time you have to do them or can you do it at any time during the day?

  • Josh (author) said:

It doesn’t matter when you work out, just as long as you get the workout in.

  • Josh (author) said:

It works bro, but you have to put the effort into it. It’s not one of those programs that’s easy and promises drastic results. This is tough and you have to commit 110% to both the diet and workouts if you want great results.

  • Gabriel said:

Alright thanks man ima purchase it this week and put you as my coach because im sure i will have more questions throughout the program.

    Thanks again for the help.

  • Josh (author) said:

    Sounds good man!

  • Andrew said:

    Hey Josh,

Since the p90x is a 90 day money back gaurantee, can i start off with the p90x classic for lets say the first two months then send it back get the money back and purchase the double or p90x+ ?

  • Josh (author) said:

The versions of P90X are just different ways to follow the program. Once you receive P90X, you will get a Fitness Guide that will explain to you how to follow each version.

  • Jas said:

    Superb results man!

I need your experience with my problem:

When I do push up or pull ups (maximum reps) when my muscle starts to fail and couldn’t do it anymore. I do not feel muscle pain but rather my muscle just stop functioning when trying to add another rep…am I bonking? I’m actually alright physical shape when I started. (In my 2nd week now) and using Nutrition Phase One.

  • Josh (author) said:

Thanks man! You need to push yourself to the point where you can’t get any more reps, which it sounds like you’re doing. Just keep committing yourself to BOTH the diet and workouts!

  • Andrew said:

how do i know for sure if the pull up bar is gonna be stable and fit on my door?

  • Andrew said:

and does the pull up bar have money back gaurantee just in case if it doesnt fit?

  • Josh (author) said:

You can see the measurements in the specifications.

  • Josh (author) said:

That’s actually one thing that I don’t know. I can’t find anything on the Beachbody site that says there’s a money back guarantee.

  • Gabriel said:

hey josh, me again i just wanted to know what type of protein shake do you recommend with shakeology or that recovery formula?

i dont know if one gives you more mass than the other which was my concern because like i said i play baseball and i dont want to get too ripped.

also, depending on the shake that you recommend. when should i take the shake and how many times a day?

    Thanks.

  • Gabriel said:

Also I just ordered the P90x, but it didnt tell me which version to pick… did i have to pick or whats the deal with that?

And I also put you as my coach, just for you to know.

  • Josh (author) said:

Gabriel, you choose which version you want to follow when you receive the program.

  • Josh (author) said:

I’m a little confused as to what you’re asking man. Are you talking about taking a whey protein shake in addition to Shakeology and the Recovery Formula? If so, P90X has a good protein, and you can learn more about it on this site.

  • Gabriel said:

my bad, im saying which shake do you recommend?

i see that theres more then one and i dont know if one is better than the other…

  • Josh (author) said:

I recommend Shakeology over everything else. It’s by far the best tasting and best overall supplement that I have used.

  • Gabriel said:

alright sounds good and shakeology should be taken once a day?

and it can be anytime during the day to replace a meal?

  • danielle said:

Hey im 5′7 and i weigh around 156. i wanna drop another like 15 lbs and tone up. My main goal is to lose the weight and look toned without looking bulky at all. Im in pretty good shape and do cardio like 4 days a week for a decent amt of time i just cant drop anymore weight. Do you think p90x is a good program for me or should I go with insanity?

  • Josh (author) said:

Danielle, insanity is a great cardio program if you really enjoy cardio, but it’s VERY hard! You really have to push yourself to complete all the workouts. P90X has more of a balance of cardio and resistance workouts. I always recommend starting off with P90X and then moving to Insanity. If you purchase the program from this site, I will become your coach and be here to help you through the program. Let me know if you have other questions!

  • Josh (author) said:

Yeah, use it any time during the day to replace a meal.

  • Matt said:

Christina, Although i doubt you’ll actually see this you aren’t suppose to add more cardio than what is already happening with p90x. IF you follow the nutrition program that also comes with p90x and you do more cardio such as running 6 miles a day then you will be burning to many calories and you won’t gain any muscle.
