Workouts

Q: What is P90X?

A: P90X is a 90 day home fitness program that will get you into excellent shape if you commit to both the diet and workouts! It’s the program that I have been using for 2 years that has gotten me absolutely ripped! You can learn more about P90X by clicking here.

Q: Should I do Insanity before P90X?

A: Insanity is a very intense program and is usually taken on by people who have already completed P90X and looking to lose that last bit of fat. Insanity only involves body weight for resistance, and is mostly cardio based.

Q: What programs have you used?

A: I’ve used P90X, Insanity, One on One, and P90X Plus.

Q: I don’t really enjoy the Yoga workout. Can I substitute it with something else?

A: Yoga is very beneficial, and I recommend that you complete the workout. It increases balance, core strength, and flexibility. It’s an important workout if you’re looking to take your fitness to the next level.

QIs it OK to do Ab Ripper X later in the evening instead of right after my workout?

A: You can do this if you really have to, but I don’t recommend it. By doing it right after your workout, you won’t have to worry about warming up or stretching again.

Q: I’m struggling with Ab Ripper X. Do you have any tips?

A: With ARX, make sure you complete all the reps, even if it means you have to pause 20 times! It will get easier and easier each week. Also, it’s important that you make sure you are using proper form for all the exercises.

Q: I just finished P90X, now what should I do?

A: You have many options: (1) You could do another round of P90X. (2) You can move to the next level by purchasing P90X Plus, Chalean Extreme, or Insanity. (3) You can combine P90X Classic with other programs like P90X Plus or Insanity.

QI just finished Round 1 of P90X. How long should I wait before jumping into Round 2?

A: I recommend waiting at least a week or two in order to let your muscles completely heal. However, if you feel it’s necessary to work out during that “rest week,” then add in a light resistance day and/or a few cardio days as well.

Q: Should I take pictures of my progress?

A: Yes! It’s important that you take all the necessary photos, preferably on Day 1, Day 30, Day 60, and Day 90. Here are the proper poses: front with hands down, front with hands on hips, front flex, back with hands down, back with hands on hips, back flex, side with hands down.

Q: I’m getting shin splints. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?

A: I used to get shin splints in the past when I played baseball, and usually it was because I didn’t have good shoes. Make sure you use shoes with the proper padding so that it lessens the impact. I also used to ice my shins to help with the inflamation. If it gets too bad, then you need to see a doctor.

Q: What version of P90X should I do?

A: There are 3 versions: Classic, Lean, and Doubles. I recommend the Classic version for anyone who is looking to put on some mass and lose body fat. This version is very popular among the men, but many women enjoy it as well. The Lean version focuses mostly on cardio, and is popular among the women. Doubles is for all the crazy people who can’t get enough exercise! It involves doing an extra cardio workout on resistance days. I did doubles during the last phase of my first round in order to burn that last bit of body fat.

Q: Should I do Doubles?

A: I followed the Classic version for the first two months and then switched to Doubles for the last month. Doubles is very demanding on the body, and it’s very important that you take in the proper pre and post workout nutrition.

Q: I’m a woman, will I gain mass with P90X?

A: This is a common worry that most women have. There is no need to worry because men develop muscle much easier than women. I have coached many women through the P90X Classic version who have gotten great results. My fiance is one of them.

Q: I’m having a hard time staying motivated. Can you help?

A: Whenever you’re struggling with anything, make sure you send me an email so I can guide you back on track. Also, make sure you read the positive thinking posts in the “Motivation” section.

Q: How many reps should I do?

A: If you’re looking to get toned, then focus on 12-15 reps, and if you’re looking to gain mass, 8-10 or 6-8 reps is best.

Q: Should I work out when I’m sick?

A: Read this post: “Should I Work Out When I’m Sick?

Yoga is so boring. Is there something else I could do? I don’t have that extra half Hour for yoga, it is just way to boring!!

  • Josh (author) said:

You are not alone my friend! If you hate Yoga that much, substitute it with Cardio X.

another question josh!i feel i have a hernia but not because of the workouts what do you think
    ?
i still workout but i use a heavy lifting belt!a doctor told me that its okay but just to use the belt but when i do the abs it really bothers me!i know your not a doctor or anything but i want to know your opinon!

  • Josh (author) said:

Haha well you’re right about one thing, and I’m not a doctor, so it’s a little tough for me to give advice in this area. The best thing you can do is see the doctor again to get his opinion.

  • Daniel said:

What time of day do you believe is best to do these workouts?

  • Josh (author) said:

It doesn’t matter what time of day you work out, just as long as you get the workout in.

  • Nicholas said:

Hey i was wondering if i want to get faster results for abs is it ok if i do ab ripperx everyday or will that mess up the whole muscle confusion thing.

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s important that you DO NOT do Ab Ripper X every day because you have to give each muscle group 48 hours to heal before working again.

  • Tizne said:

Hey josh, I’m starting P90X tonight like starting in about 20 mins, so which version should I do? Right now at High school I have a weight training class but it’s really giving me the results that I really want to..The class is based on Speed Strength Training, but i guess it wont work for me. I’m very capable of doing every workout in P90x, At least i hope. Anyways which one do you recommend for me?

  • robert lopez said:

would it be ok if i did the ab circle pro after i do my workouts? Will it be to much for my abs?

  • robert lopez said:

me again. Will the ab ripper x garantee me a 6 pack? is it the only ab exercise?

  • robert lopez said:

should you still take whey protein or creatin even if your not skinny. im not fat or skinny. should i take them as soon as i start p90x?

  • robert lopez said:

sorry i have ANOTHER question. did you do rev abs while you were doing p90x?

  • Josh (author) said:

I recommend the Classic version for all men.

  • Josh (author) said:

Is that along with Ab Ripper X? I only recommend doing 1 ab routine with each resistance workout.

  • Josh (author) said:

With the proper diet and exercise, you should see the abs.

  • Josh (author) said:

Creatine is mostly for people who are looking to gain mass, but whey protein is great for everyone. Take the whey as soon as you start the program.

  • Josh (author) said:

No, but plan on adding it into my routine soon.

  • robert lopez said:

Do you have to take the energy supplements? because i’ve heard they are very bad for you.

  • robert lopez said:

How long did it take you to start to see your abs? What kind of ecercises did you do for your abs? and how often did you do those exercices? and did you add in any cardio to help your abs? if so do i need to jog or will p90x do the cardio for me?

  • Josh (author) said:

Who did you hear that from? Many supplements are good for you and can help tremendously with your results, especially whey protein.

  • Josh (author) said:

It took me about 3 weeks to start noticing my abs. P90X has all the workouts necessary to get abs.

  • ROBERT LOPEZ said:

how often did you do the ab ripper x in one week?

  • Josh (author) said:

After each of the resistance workouts, which is the correct way to follow it.

  • Tizne said:

Sup dude i keep on looking at your website everyday for new updates and posts, good job!
Well i was wondering if after doing my daily routine in P90X and after finishing the ARX, can I do some more ab workouts for faster results in the abs? thanks

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s not beneficial to add in more ab exercises along with the ones you’re already doing. You have to remember that seeing the abs is not in how many sit-ups you can do, but the proper diet that you follow. You have to give each muscle group, including the abs, 48 hours to heal before working again.

  • robert lopez said:

would it tramaticly reduce my results if i didn’t take any supplements?

  • Josh (author) said:

Supplements help maximize your results, but you will get results if you follow the proper diet and complete the workouts. However, I feel that supplements have a huge part in your success with this progarm.

will muscle milk be enouph for my workouts or do i really need weigh protein?

  • DannyF said:

Hi josh, what would happen if i was to just do ab ripper x on its own, without the diet and the rest of the programe?

  • Josh (author) said:

It sounds to me that you’re putting too much weight on the chair, and not using your back enough. You should always push yourself and should barely have any weight on the chair.

  • Josh (author) said:

    I recommend whey protein.

  • Josh (author) said:

    You wouldn’t get results.

  • Brennan said:

Josh, just wondering how long does it usually take to start seeing results, like starting to see your abs more, or bicep/tricept muscles increasing?

  • Josh (author) said:

If you are following the workouts and diet strictly, then you should start seeing and feeling results within the first few weeks.

    Hey Josh,

My name is Ryan and I mobilized to Kuwait in November, I left the exercise guide book at home and can’t remember if you do ARX during the rest week? I only have about 2 1/2 from the time I get off work to: workout, eat, and then go to bed to get 6 hours of sleep before I have to get up to do it all over again. I was wondering if only 6 hours of sleep would hurt my results that much? And I was also wondering if you had some healthy dinner reciepts that could be made in 30 minutes or less. Thanks man for any insight you can provide me.

    Ryan

  • Josh (author) said:

You will actually do Core Synergistics during the rest week instead of ARX. However, there is nothing wrong with adding it into your workouts, just as long as it isn’t on the Core day. Also, 6 hours of sleep should be enough and will barely effect your results, if any at all, only because you might have a slight lack in energy for your workouts. Of course the optimal amount of sleep time is 8 hours, but it sounds like it’s something you don’t have control over. No need to worry about that. An example of a quick dinner might be something like Tuna Wraps, which include Fat-Free Mayo, Tuna, Onion, and Whole Grain Tortilla Wraps. My fiance does all the cooking, but I’m pretty sure she just mixes tuna, mayo, and onions together and sticks them in the wrap.

  • Kasinator said:

So start at phase 1 again to start round 2? No problem! Ill be doing doubles again! Should I do cardio X in phase 1 as well? I really want to make sure my belly stays lean. Also would you recommend the use of ankle, wrist, and body weights? In cases like pullups pushups, This can definitely be great, but I am not so sure about things like swing kicks in plyo. as far as creative liberties are concerned, I did use a belly sweat band for cardio based exercises. I didn’t for Ab Ripper X because I was worried it would just get in the way.

Thanks again for all the advice. You really are a great inspiration. P.S. you looked great on TV!

  • rodrigo said:

hey what diet phase did you follow in the progran or did you use more than one and what work out did you do classic or doubles

  • alex said:

Ok im looking to start this myself…my question is do you do the program 7 days a week? And normally how long do these workouts last per day (1 hour, 2 hours??). Thanks for your time.

  • Braiden said:

    Hey Josh,
I enjoy running quite a bit and i always have but I have always had this body fat that wont go away. I started the classis version of P90X one week ago and i love it but I wonder if i can still throw in about 7 or 8 miles of running per week? Obviously i know its good for me but i worry i might be over doing it, would i be stressing out my body too much? Can the Fat Shredder diet (level 3) support my workouts with all this running added in? Let me know

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s actually going to be hard for you to start the Phase 1 diet during your second round because of the low carbs leading to lack of energy. However, start with the Phase 1 workouts, which is what I thought you meant before. Also, extra weights will help get you better results. I have used a weighted backpack for legs, back, and chest workouts, and it gives you a better workout. You can also use them for some cardio workouts, but make sure you don’t injure your joints.

  • Josh (author) said:

You can find the answers in the “Q&A” section.

  • Josh (author) said:

I do the program 6-7 times a week, and the average time for the workouts is about an hour.

  • Josh (author) said:

You can run along with P90X, but it will limit the amount of muscle that you develop. I used to do the same thing during my 3rd round and noticed that I hit a plateau, so I ended up stopping the running all together. The Level 3 Fat Shredder should be good, just as long as you take in the proper recovery after each workout. For that I recommend the Recovery Formula.

  • rodrigo said:

so what did you do classic or doubles

  • Ryan said:

Coach, is the recovery week necessary or can we just skip it?

  • Josh (author) said:

I followed the Classic version for the first few months and then switched to Doubles.

  • Josh (author) said:

The Recovery Week is very important to allow your body some rest from the real vigorous workouts.

  • rodrigo said:

so you mean you did classic for phase one and two? and then swtiched to doubles

  • Josh (author) said:

    Yeah that’s correct.

  • rodrigo said:

hey josh i was thinking of doing lean for 30 days restart the program and do classic or doubles. is that ok

  • Josh (author) said:

    That’s completely up to you.

I just discovered this program this morning and your YouTube video really got me pumped. However, I’m confused how it works.. do we follow a 12 day routine, doing CD1 the 1st day, CD2 the 2nd, etc etc until you start CD1 again on day 13? And does each CD specifically spell out how much to do etc?

I am an 18 year old male
6′2 and 195lbs.. in average shape, but look flabby/lame.. nott a good beach bod. never have looked good. what should i do? would definitely like to lose 15-20 pounds and look cut.

I have a real tough time doing the pullups, in fact I can’t do many at all and I find pulldowns with the band too easy. Any suggestions?

  • Josh (author) said:

There are 3 different phases that you will follow throughout your 90 days, and each phase uses a different set of DVD’s. Once you recieve the program, you will get instructions on how to follow it. I recommend that you purchase the program if you’re looking to get into excellent shape, and you can do so through this site. Doing so will also make me your coach as well.

  • Josh (author) said:

Do the assisted pull-ups, which are for people who can’t do unassisted.

  • Will said:

Thanks for the advice. I have the program already. I could also do the counter-balanced pull ups at the gym if im willing to wait till I get there.

    Josh,

You are now my coach, but I’m wondering how this is supposed to be formatted, so you just answer questions when asked? Are we suposed to check-in periodically to ensure progression? Please email me @ stevehesselton@hotmail.com so we can clarify what the deal is…

In the meantime, I have a question. I just finished Day 18, and I noticed that I am approaching the “rest week”. I understand the importance of resting your muscles from the intense workouts etc. but, like you, in the past I played a lot of sports and did some serious weight training… with P90x, I love that I am putting all the pieces of the puzzle together (shredding fat, following a strict diet, and mixing core exercises and cardio etc.) because I want to literally have a nice beach body (not just look like a meat head with baby fat on my abs). Approaching the rest week, I am noticing my fat shredding and trading it for lean muscle in (especially in the chest), but I am worried that I am already not strengthening my upperbody enough and if I go another week of not lifting alot with my chest, I will look flabby in the chest (or something.. if you get what I mean)… So, with that, have you ever hit the bench at all to lift heavier weights during the program, or do you reccommend doing some upper body (maintenence) workouts during week 4?? Did you?

Sorry for the long-winded question, I just want to get this right, I’m dedicating alot of time and energy into this… thanks again Josh, I appreciate your time.

As your coach, I’ll be here to answer any questions when you have them. Also, it would be benificial for you to email me every few weeks to check in so I can hold you accountable. Also, understand that as your coach I earn a commission from any Beachbody products that you purchase, whether it be from this site or Team Beachbody. Just make sure you’re signed in. It helps with the amount of time I will spend helping you out. To answer your questions..

    (1) I started adding in some additional chest workouts along with P90X within the past 8 months in order to put on some mass. However, understand that it isn’t necessary and push-ups alone will get you definition.

Let me know if you have other questions.

They are different versions of the program. You can read more about them in the “Q&A” section under “Workouts.”

  • Josh (author) said:

Plyos is more intense than Cardio X, so it’s important that you complete the workout.

  • Josh (author) said:

Follow the diet and workouts and you will get results.

  • Josh (author) said:

You need to stay away from any shoulder or upper body exercises for now. Focus on the legs without using any weights. Also, when you start back up, start the program over again since you will miss 5 weeks.

Hey man i am modifying the workout schedule just a bit to make it more restistence based rather then cardio because i am looking to build. i just wanted to see if the schedule i made up was overworking the muscles or if it would be a pretty good routine for trying to focus more on muscle building. the schedule is below. its the first phase schedule.

    Weeks 1, 2, and 3
Day 1 – Chest and Back, plus Ab Ripper X
    Day 2 – Plyometrics
Day 3 – Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper X
    Day 4 – Chest light – X Stretch
Day 5 – Legs and Back, Ab Ripper X
Day 6 – Shoulders and Arms light – Alternate- Kenpo X
    Day 7 – Yoga X

as you can see i just made it so i am working each muscle group twice a week but making it light workout (doing bench and some other dumbell movements for light chest day ect. ect.)

just wanted to get your opinion.

    thanks coach

    Josh-
Was home today due to a sick kid and decided to start trying out legs and back. Man, I’m not even half way through the workout and I’m pushing to failure on most of these exercises of 10 reps on push ups (except diamond, I died on 4, and passed the pre fit test). I’m embarrassed man. Did you have low reps when you first began? I’m just really angry with myself for getting this out of shape after all these years (not fat, I’m slender, just physically out of shape). I need some motivation man.

  • Josh (author) said:

No need to be embarrassed man! Legs & Back is one of the toughest X workouts there is! Everyone, including me, struggles with that workout, and most others at first. Just be patient, keep pushing yourself, focus on the diet and you will get results!

Blackbean burger (17g protien)with slice of cheese for dinner.

Probably have 3 pieces of string cheese before I go to bed (if I can stomach it, I’m so full) I haven’t ate this much in I don’t know how long.

The workout kicked my butt, I did better than last time. Tried to go to failure on everything so my reps are very low (average about 4-6 between chin ups and sit ups).

    Any thoughts?

Casein is great to take before bed if you’re strictly looking to gain mass. Also, am I your coach?

Yeah, I signed up through your site and bought bars drink and vitamins also through your site let me know if somehow I didn’t do it correctly. The gainer that I bought has casein in it as well as isolate and complex and also does contaon creatine

I appreciate you ordering from the site man!

Sup Josh three quick questions, how long into the first month did it take for you to notice your abs showing and 2nd im on day 5 and yesterday and today i felt hungry even tho i was following the diet and eating regularly is this normal? and finally i wake up at 7:30ish and grab breakfast first then wait an hour then work out. but i heard its better to work out then eat, any comments on that?

Also can u link me the site to buy the P90X Protein Bars. Id prefer to buy it off your site if i can. Thanks again Josh, much appreciated.

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey man! I started noticing my abs in about the 3rd week. Just keep following the diet and workouts and you will get results. Also, it doesn’t matter if you workout before or after the workouts, but if you do eat before, make sure you give the food enough time to digest. Also, there are 3 different kinds of protein bars, and you can find them all in the “Supplements” section.

hey Josh, i bruised my back bone and cant do ab ripper x and some lunges in the legs and back CD. Also trying to put on some mass.
    I just had a few questions…
1.) Since i can’t do ab ripper x for a week, will this affect my results?
2.)is there any workout you suggest I do to replace ab ripper x?
3.)should i still continue to take my recovery formula even after i comleted my workout at a lower intensity due to my back injury?
4.) Would mixing skim milk instead of water with my casein shake before bed encourage fat storage because of the amount of simple carbs it has?

it would be great if you could answer the questions above for me please, and also, do you sell the recovery formula in the packets?

  • Josh (author) said:

The Recovery Formula does also come in packets. Here is the link to purchase them in packet form: http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/P90XRRFPackets?referringRepId=11685

  • Josh (author) said:

    To answer your questions..

    (1) No, just make sure you’re eating properly! You want to get that back healed!
    (2) Again, you are going to want to lay off any workouts that put strain on your back.
    (3) Yes, the Recovery Formula is very important to take post workout!
    (4) Skim milk doesn’t have a ton of simple carbs in it to really affect you too much. However, of course water is better.

  • Richard said:

Hi i just started px90 today i did the chest and back struggling along the way. And when I went to the abe workout right after i couldent really do any reps so would waiting to do it later on in the day be best and would i still end with the same results.

  • Edo Esho said:

Whats up Josh! Hey man just filling you in on my progress im on day 13, i dropped from 172 to 166 my abs arnt quite there but i noticed my stomach is completly flat. normally id have to suck it in to do that lol, but heres the question.. I was never out of shape when i started the P90X and my BMI was 12% prior to starting so at what BMI or body fat percentage would i have to be at to really notice the abs? that seems to be my main focus cause everything else was pritty well toned prior to P90X. Thanks again Josh for your time.

  • Richard said:

Also i was wondering how long did it take for you to complete the abe ripper x without haveing to pause the video or if you had to.

  • Josh (author) said:

I recommend completing Ab Ripper X right after the workout because you’re already warmed up and stretched out. You need to complete all the reps, even if you have to pause it 20 times! Also, am I your coach? If not, click on the link: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/11685

  • Josh (author) said:

Awesome bro! It’s hard to say what body fat % you have to be in order to really see the abs. Mine was around 10%. Just keep committing yourself to both the diet and workouts and you will continue to see results!

  • Josh (author) said:

It took me around a month to complete the entire workout without pausing.

  • Evan said:

Hey man i feel like the cardio workouts arent pushing me enough. i feel like i could be doing more work i used to run so im in farely decent shape. Any advice?

  • Josh (author) said:

You could always look into either Insanity or P90X Plus, which have very high intensity cardio workouts.

  • John said:

Josh- could i do the ab ripper x on cardio days instead of doing it on the resistence days? because after the resistence days im really tired and dont even feel like doing it thnx

  • Brand0n said:

    Hi Josh,

You are my coach and I haven’t introduced myself…So Hello…I have a question though.

I started the P90X program however I live on the third floor of an apartment building….obviously my neighbors won’t appreciate me doing the Plyometrics….is there a substitute and how much affect is it going to have on my overall outcome if I don’t do it?

  • jimmy said:

What’s up josh, what weight or color resistance band should I get to replace the weights and probably pullups bar. And what length is good. Thanks. Sorry for the double post. My name came out wrong.

  • Josh (author) said:

There aren’t different length of bands, but there are different resistances. I recommend the Resistance Bands Extreme for men, which you can purchase from this site.

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey bro! I actually live in an upstairs apartment as well, and I went to Wal-Mart and purchased padded mats, which soften the sound tremendously! They aren’t expensive at around $30 for a 6×6 section. You need to do all the workouts!

  • Josh (author) said:

You could do that if you wanted.

  • Brand0n said:

    Good call…I’m on it…Thanks

  • Gustavo said:

Hey Josh, do you/ have you ever had an issue with holding the weights through to exhaustion? It seems as though for arm workouts, my hands get tired of holding the weight before my biceps do, so I have to break. Is taking breaks during a set bad? Should I just do as many as my hands can take?

  • Josh (author) said:

I never used to have that problem until I broke my hand. Now, I have a hard time gripping the weights for some of the exercises. However, I still make sure I push myself and complete all the reps. If you can’t grip it very long, then take a very short break.

  • Azzie said:

Josh, amazing transformation…truly inspirational! Just started P90X today and I have a question about running while on the program. I am currently in the middle of training for a half marathon, we are doing about 20 miles or so a week and are increasing that in the coming weeks. My question is how is running that much going to affect my results? I am about 5′9″, 173lbs and I am pretty lean already…I am looking to lose my love handles and get a nice toned 6-pack as well as add on a little more muscle. My current diet is pretty consistent with the fat shredder diet and I just started using whey protein and jack3d. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Josh (author) said:

Because you are going to be burning so many calories per day, it’s going to be very important that you’re eating properly. You might want to bump up the amount of cals to take in by about a 500-700 extra per day.

  • Azzie said:

Yea, I was definitely thinking I would need to increase my calorie intake each day. Do you think it would be beneficial for me to have my percentages around 20/40/40 during the 1st phase?

  • Josh (author) said:

If you’re looking to lose fat/weight, then you need to follow Phase 1. If you’re looking to gain weight/mass, then switch to Phase 2 or 3.

  • bong said:

dude i have a question. . did u have any cheat days? like, do u have any certain days that you eat anything that u want?

  • Ian said:

Hey Josh. Currently taking in 1700-1800 cals daily. 5′5″ 130. If I do doubles ( cardio x on resistance days) how much more cals do I add to my diet. Phase 2 now so I’ll definately keep the 20 40 40 ratio still

    thx

  • Josh (author) said:

If you’re going to do Doubles, then you need to increase the cals by about 300-400 on the day you do the double workout. Also, am I your coach? If not, click on the link to make me your coach: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/11685

  • Josh (author) said:

I try to stay away from cheating on my diet as much as possible. I might have a cheat meal once a month, if that. If you’re going through your first round of P90X, you shouldn’t cheat at all. hey josh dude u r ripped! haha but im 12 and was wondeirn if P90x would give me results because im just in the 1st week with my dad.

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey bud. You are definitetly going to want to talk to your doctor before beginning and intense program like P90X at your age.

  • tony said:

    hey josh,

is 8-10 reps like 10 pull ups or push up and 12 – 15 , 12 or 15 pull ups or push ups? i dont understand why doing less would make u more bulky and doing more, is more lean. i also find myself weaker on my 4th day than on the first. is this because ive stopped by daily pushups? thx

  • Josh (author) said:

Tony, you need to follow the program and what Tony recommends. You are going to go till failure with both pull-ups and push-ups, but want to focus on 8-10 reps for the exercises that Tony recommends 12-15.

  • Adam said:

Hey Josh, I was wondering since I’m doing doubles could I trade cardio x for an insanity cardio workout. If so would I consume more calories. Thank you!

  • Seth said:

Did u follow the p90x workout day by day or did you sub out categories like the recovery day with something else that is harder?

  • Josh (author) said:

Hey Seth! I followed the program exactly how it’s supposed to be followed, which is what I recommend for you as well.

  • Josh (author) said:

Yeah man! Anything to increase the intensity is great! And yes, increase the cals by about a 100 or a little more.

  • miles said:

I really like the chest shoulders and tri work out and i want to focus on chest a little more, would it decrease the effectiveness of the program if i replaced yoga with chest shoulder tri sometimes? Or am I better off doing yoga every week?
    Thanks!

  • Josh (author) said:

There are a ton of benefits of Yoga, and I recommend that you complete it.

  • Seth said:

Alright, I just got the p90x today and I finished it, wen I was doing the ab ripper x I couldn’t feel it in my abs. I felt it in my back and legs, basically I felt it everywhere except my abs. Does this mean I’m doing it wrong? I don’t want to spend 90 days of this just 2 find out that I was doing it wrong or something cuz the main reasson I bought it was 2 get abs like u lol :)

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s very common to feel it more in your legs and lower back at first. ARX is an entire core workout, not just one that works the abs only.

  • Luc said:

    hey josh, i wanted to ask you for round 2 of p90x i want to mix it up a little bit with p90x and p90xplus. I dont have that much mass and i read somewhere on here that the p90x workouts are better for gaining mass so i think im going to do this;

    Phase 1
    -chest and back and abs/core+
    -interval X plus
    -shoulders and arms and abs/core+
    -yoga
    -legs and back and abs/core+
    -kenpo cardio X plus
    -rest

    Phase 2

    -Chest,shoulders,triceps and ab ripper X
    -plyometrics
-back and bicep and ab ripper X
    -yoga
-legs and back and ab ripper X
    -kenpo X plus

    Phase 3
    -chest and back and abs/core+
    -interval X plus
    -shoulders and arms and abs/core+
    -yoga
    -legs and back and abs/core+
    -kenpo cardio X plus
    -rest
and recovery weeks i will do the normal p90x classic recovery weeks

what do u think about it, do u think abs core plus after those resistance workouts will be too much or no?

    thanks for you help,

  • gustavo said:

hey man like to gain mass i have to do 6-8 reps of heavy weights right. and i dont like doing yoga can i just like do 40 minutes of yoga and like 30 minutes of lifting?

  • Josh (author) said:

There are a ton of benefits of Yoga, so I highly recommend that you complete it!

  • Josh (author) said:

The routine you put together looks great! You can also incorporate some of the Plus Resistance workouts as well.

  • michael said:

    hey josh

during the chest and back section of p90x i was doing about 25 reps for every push up section. but in the chest shoulder triceps im doing about 12 reps. is there something wrong or is this normal? thanks

  • Josh (author) said:

It’s pretty normal man. You have to remember that those are exercises that your body isn’t to. Just keep pushing yourself!

  • michael said:

    hey josh ,

for the pull ups i cant seem to go all the way down. my arms would only go halfway, if i go any lower, than i wont b able to do the pull ups and end up not doing as much as i want to . should i use the chair or not? thnx

  • Josh (author) said:

How come your arms don’t go all the way down? Anyways, do as many unassisted as you can because that’s how you will make progress!

  • michael said:

    hey josh

i asked u on friday but u never replyed so im not sure if u got my question or not. it was if i do go al the way down on my pullups ill only be able to do 5, if i dont go all the way down, i can do 12 shoul i go all the way down of not?

Evan, if you follow the diet and workouts properly, you will get results with this program! It takes some serious commitment to get the kind of results I got. If you purchase the program from this site, I will become your coach and be here to help you through the program. Let me know if you have other questions!

  • Josh (author) said:

The diet is the most important part of the program and you’re really going to have to commit yourself to it if you want excellent results. Also, click on the link to make me your coach: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/11685

Michael, you should always use proper form with pull-ups, which means going all the way down. It’s VERY important!

  • Kevin said:

Can I do ab ripper X right after cardio workouts instead of resistance workouts?

  • Josh (author) said:

You can do that if you want.

  • Eddie said:

Hey josh, just want to say i appreciate all that you do on here man, thanks for the help!
My question is that I’m currently doing my round one of P90x, but the thing is that i missed many days and im on my third month. I mostly missed out on bicep..I was wondering if it would hurt to fit in resistant work outs with my cardio/plyo/kenpo days..or is that no bueno due to the 48 hour rest rule or something like that?
    thanks man.

  • Josh (author) said:

@Eddie. Yeah, you want to make sure you give each muscle group 48 hours rest before working again.

  • Jon said:

    Josh,

I will be going away for a couple of days in a couple weeks, i will not have weights or DVD’s with me, i will be gone for my shoulders & arms day, and yoga day. Are there any exercises or activities you could recommend to substitute for those days.

    Thanks,
    Jon

  • Josh (author) said:

@Jon. The most important thing to do is focus on a healthy diet while away. Also, if you have access to maybe a hotel gym, try to get in a lift or even a run.

  • alonzo said:

i skipped about 3 days of p90x due tto finals. should i start over or should i do the vids i missed in one day? thanx tony

  • Josh (author) said:

@Tony. You shouldn’t start the program over unless you just started. Just pick up where you left off. There is no need to do 3 workouts in a day.

  • Vic said:

Hey Josh I’m 17 6′2″ around 167 pounds and I am looking to get bigger will p90x give me the results? I just bought the program for fathers day but looking to use it as well haha. I would like to be 185 and know that it’s going to be hard but all I need to do is press play right? Do u think by day 90 I will reach my goal I mean I’m not weak I have muscle just want to get that extra weight you know. I would greatly appreaciate any insight you have.

  • JR said:

    Josh,

Hey brother it’s me again. I forgot to mention, while doing the workouts, I kept having to pause and pause and pause. I got to the point to where I was getting really discouraged and wanted to quit the whole thing. I’m starting the classic phase and hoping to move to doubles.

Looking back, I realized I could only do 1/4 of what everyone in the DVD’s could do. I’m 29 years old 6′ 202lbs of ugly flab, I want to drop at least 12-17 pounds by the end of this program.

Any advice that could help keep me going to get in the same shape as you? I’ve got a honeymoon coming up in November, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, God bless.

    Josh-

Nice work BTW. IM a 41 year old male, retired from the Army. I was blown up in Iraq in 2003 (about this time). Broken back and crap like that. Anyways, IM back in enough condition to start getting back to the abs, and muscle I had before. Doing ab workouts do concern me, I dont want to screw up my back. I can modify the ab routine, but how can I still get the results? Thanks

  • Josh (author) said:

@Martin. There is nothing wrong with modifying the workouts if there is something that you can’t physically do.

  • Josh (author) said:

@JR. If you want results, then you have to commit yourself 100% to both the diet and the workouts. If not, you won’t get the results you want.

hi, i am thinking about working out in the morning so should i eat anything befor i work out? and how long should i wait after the work out to eat breakfast?

  • Josh (author) said:

@John. It doesn’t matter if you eat anything before the workout or not. I recommend not eating because you have to let the food digest for at least an hour before working out. You can eat breakfast right after you’re finished.

  • Kevin said:

Hey Josh! I have a question regarding the chest workout in P90x. I just started the program a week ago and I don’t really have much of a chest. I was wondering if just working out the chest once a week, as in the program, will help me build a larger chest? I’m not talking about a huge body builder chest but more along the lines of a beach body chest. I’m concerned that the chest is only worked out once a week and feel that this may not be enough. Did you achieve your results through just push ups or did you incorporate weight training into the program? Thanks and once again your results are amazing!

  • Josh (author) said:

@Kevin. During my first round I followed the P90X exercises exactly how they are set up. I didn’t start adding in some extra chest exercises until my 2nd round. However, I’ve been only doing push-ups again for the past year or so. The P90X chest workout works!
