New Years Resolutions

Now that Christmas is over, most people shift their attentions to the New Year, and part of that involves creating New Years Resolutions. Yeah, most people create them, but how many actually follow through? Studies show that only a very small percentage of people actually complete their goals for the year. What’s interesting is that the majority of people make a new years resolution to lose weight! So why are so many people struggling to complete their weight loss goals each year?

What happens is that many people go through the holidays, eat whatever they want, gain some weight, and then make it a New Years Resolution to lose weight come the first of the year. They get all pumped up, ready to commit themselves, and say “This is it! I’m finally going to lose weight!” but then 2 weeks later they fall back into a routine, into their unhealthy lifestyle. They don’t lose the weight, and go through the entire year feeling sorry for themselves, having low self-esteem, and say that there is always next year. How many years are you going to wait to make a change? Why happens in the first two weeks that causes people to completely quit working towards their goals? I can tell you what it is, it’s being forced outside of their comfort zone.

Losing weight is hard, losing a lot of weight is even harder. There is nothing easy about working out every day, committing to a healthy diet, especially if you’re so used to not working out and eating crappy food. You fell into a routine, a bad routine that is, but none-the-less a routine. When you get into a routine, sometimes it’s near impossible to get out of that routine. Why? Because you’re taking a risk, you’re forced to work hard, you have to step outside your comfort zone. When I fell out of shape back in January of 2008, I knew I needed something to get back into shape, and that was when I decided to commit to P90X. I’ll be the first to admit that those first two weeks of P90X were probably one of the toughest two weeks I’ve had to go through. I was sore, I was completely new to the whole eating healthy thing, but because I was mentally strong, I defied the odds and stayed committed for over two weeks, going on to lose 25 lbs, 10% body fat, and literally get into the best shape of my life over the course of 90 days. I didn’t cheat on my diet, I didn’t skip a workout, and I committed myself physically and mentally 100%!

If your New Years Resolution this year is to lose weight, don’t give up when you’re forced to step outside your comfort zone. If you’re sore, remember that the soreness goes away. If you’re craving sweets and junk food, remember that the cravings go away. Be patient, and understand that it’s the positive consistent effort over time that’s going to help you reach your goals. Don’t be a statistic and become one of the many who can’t complete their weight loss goal this coming year! I did it, thousands of others have done it, and there is nothing stopping you from doing it as well except yourself. YOU have to stay mentally strong and commit to BOTH the diet and the workouts if you want to get outstanding results! I believe in you, will be here to help you, but ultimately, you’re the one who has to make the change!
