For the past few months, Melinda and I have been drinking green tea every night before heading to bed. Don’t ask me why we’ve started doing this because I have no idea, but maybe because of the many health benefits we have heard that are associated with green tea. Whatever the reason we got on this kick, we have been doing it, so I’ve decided to do a little research to find out the true benefits of green tea.
One of the things that all the resources had common when talking about the benefits of green tea is the ability to reduce the risk of cancer. According to the Journal of National Cancer Institute (1994), green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by about 60%. The university of Purdue even found that a component in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. On top of that, there have been studies showing that another benefit of green tea is that it lowers overall cholesterol levels (http://chinesefood.about.com/library/weekly/aa011400a.htm). I don’t know about you, but that’s enough to convince me to continue drinking it on a daily basis!
So what’s in green tea that makes it so special? Green tea contains powerful antioxidants called catechins, one in particular called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which seems to be the most potent of the bunch. This is the magic piece that is able to limit cancer cell development, and even kill cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue. Some studies have even shown that EGCG is 100 times more effective than Vitamin C and 25 times more effective than Vitamin E at neutralizing free radicals, which are believed to cause tissue damage at the cellular level (http://www.o-cha.com/health.htm)
Some of the other benefits of green tea include burning fat, preventing diabetes and stroke, and fighting off dementia. (http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/health-benefits-of-green-tea). From what I have heard, green tea boosts the metabolism, and can really be effective in burning fat when you combine it with a healthy diet regimen and workout routine.
So, now you know some of the benefits of green tea, and hopefully you start incorporating it into your daily diet regimen! Melinda and I love it, and will continue drinking it every night before bed. In case you have wondered, yes, it does contain caffeine, but no, it doesn’t effect me. I love my caffeine, and it takes a ton to effect me, and that’s why I can drink it right before bed. If you don’t drink a lot of caffeine, try drinking green tea in the morning or afternoon.
