How To Stop Eating Junk Food

I have to laugh at the name of this post because it might be the single most difficult thing to do when trying to commit to a healthy lifestyle. If you’re doing a program like P90X or Insanity, you have heard from me before that if you want great results, you have to commit to a healthy diet. There is no going around it! Plain and simple, do it if you want results, or not do it and fail. Sure, I might be a little blunt about it, but there are so many people that just can’t grasp the concept! EAT HEALTHY!

OK, let’s back up slightly to right before I started P90X. This is no joke, I used to have at least 3 huge bowls of ice cream a week late at night with Hershey’s Chocolate Hard Shell piled on top. That’s bad, but that’s not it. I would also have a bowl of cereal each night, and I’m not talking about whole grain Cheerios, but rather cereals that are high in sugar like Lucky Charms. I’m not done. I never ate breakfast, and my lunch and dinners consisted of pizza, fried chicken fingers, french fries, and spaghetti. It’s a wonder how I wasn’t 250 lbs! If you look over those, there is nothing nutritious.

When I began P90X, I knew that I had to completely shift my eating habits or else I wouldn’t get the results I wanted. I knew that because of all the research I did about the program and how many people credited the diet for their results. The one thing that people do know about me is that when I set my mind to something, you better watch out because I don’t let anything stop me and I don’t ever get off track! I commit myself to whatever it is until I reach my goal. I knew that eating healthy played a huge part in seeing results, so that’s exactly what I did. There were even some people that laughed at me when I told them I would commit myself to the diet because they knew my past habits. They gave me 2 weeks until I would cave in. Well, over a year and a half later, I am still committed to a healthy diet, and you all have seen my results. I’m very proud of what I achieved because I know how much hard work and dedication I put into this.

So how do you stop eating junk food? Here are some tips..

(1) This is the most important. Understand the importance of a healthy diet in getting results. Like I tell everyone that I coach over and over again, diet makes up 80% of your results! If you can’t understand this, you will come back to me in 90 days complaining that the program didn’t get you the results you wanted. I get it often, and all I tell them is what I’ve said hundreds of other times, and that’s to commit yourself to the diet.

(2) Don’t surround yourself with junk food! The first thing you need to do is go through your kitchen and throw away any junk food, which includes ice cream, cookies, cake, sugar cereals, pizza, etc. You might be saying, “Well I’m just throwing away money by doing that!” My response? Well, there are sacrifices you are going to have to make to get great results, results like I got and the others in my Success Stories section achieved as well. The fact of the matter is that if you don’t have it, you won’t eat it!

(3) Stay away from eating out! This is one of the toughest times to eat healthy, mainly because just about every restaurant contains very little selections of healthy foods. Most are rediculously high in fat and carbs, all guiding you away from reaching your goals. When you eat at home, you can control the amount of calories and fat/carbs/protein content. Now, I’m not saying you can’t eat out at all. There are times that I have no choice to eat out, whether it be because of a family function or get together, but I always watch what I eat. Stick with grilled chicken salads with a low fat or fat free dressing, grilled chicken with veggies, or grilled fish, and you should be fine.

If you can understand and follow the three tips above, along with completing each workout, you will have success with any program that you are following, whether it be P90X, Insanity, Slim in 6, RevAbs, or your own workout regimen.


  1. This is the second hardest thing for me behind not letting my ADD ruin my commitment to staying the course.

  2. My advice is to definitely use FitDay every day, because I’m on Day 34 and I haven’t cheated yet because every time I am tempted to, I think about having to enter in a Snickers bar or something into the website and the guilt I would feel and that helps me to control myself.
