Am I Too Young to do P90X?

The P90X program seems to be spreading like wild fire across the US, even among teenagers. Recently, the number of young people that have approached me about the program has been increasing. There is no doubt that it’s good to start working out and eating healthy during the teenage years, but what age is too young to do an intense program like P90X?

The cut-off age for P90X should be 14 years old. Why? Most boys hit puberty at 13 years old, and at that time their muscles and bones are still not quite developed. However, when people say that weight lifting stunts your growth, it’s actually a myth. The theory behind the myth is because, like I mentioned above, most childrens’ bones aren’t completely developed at that age, and they have growth plates at the end of most bones, which are more fragile than other bones. The reason I believe P90X should not be done at that age is because of the extreme intensity, not the weight lifting aspect. Weightlifitng will not effect the growth as long as there is no injury to the growth plate, but with the proper safety precautions and measures, that should not happen. What are the safety measures?

(1) Make sure you have a spotter when lifting heavy weights. It’s never safe for anyone, let alone young teenagers, to lift heavy weights without someone there to help.

(2) Focus on proper technique. Many injuries from weightlifting come from using the wrong technique during the exercises. When doing P90X, make sure you pay close attention to Tony’s form. When doing regular weight lifting, make sure you ask someone who knows or do research on the internet for proper technique.

(3) Always warm-up before working out. When you warm up the muscles, they loosen up and are able to expand further than if they were cold. This helps prevent pulled muscles.

Other benefits of P90X for teenagers:

I believe P90X is great for teenagers who are in sports. The reason being is because it increases athletic performance by improving your balance, strength, flexibility, core strength, and quickness. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have done this program in high school if it was around back then.

Alot of the people from my school are doing P90x for basketball conditioning or another really athletic sport. But im a dancer and i definatly do not want to loose weight i am very happy with my weigh i eat extremely healthy always have always will. But i was considering doing P90x but i was wondering if you knew about any of the other workout programs (from beachbody) like Turbo Fire. Would that be a better alternative for me compared to P90x???
    Thanx.

  4. I am a 15 year old. I am pretty fit, but I’m wondering if p90x is good for baseball. I’ve heared so many back and forth things about it and I was wondering your opinion. I’ve consulted my doctor about it and he says its ok.

  5. @Stevie. YES! I wish I would have known about the program back when I was playing high school and college baseball.

  6. @Randee. Since you are a dancer, you would love Turbofire! My fiance and I like to do those workouts together because they are fun to do.

  7. Okay, Thanks, i have done competitive dancing for 10 years so yea. I am looking forward to it. Thank you so much.

  8. I’m 18 and about 145 pounds so I’m looking to gain some muscle weight and be in better shape. Will P90X help me to gain muscle weight or will i actually lose weight, which i don’t want to do?

  9. @Joe. You can gain weight, just as long as you make the proper adjustments. Type in “gain mass with p90x” in the search box on the home page.

  10. im 11 and a bunch of kids in my grade r doing it so i might

  11. hey im 15 years old and i almost wiegh 200lbs but im athletic the only problem is i have bad eatting habits. should i use px90? would it cost me any money? ohw do i stay on track?

  12. Hi,
I’m 15 years old, and I do mixed martial arts 4 times a week for 2 and a half hours. I’m pretty toned but skinny. Would P90X help me add muscle?

  13. @Sam. I built muscle with P90X, and I’m helping a buddy of mine gain some muscle mass as well.

  14. @Nicole. You correct your bad eating habits or you will never get results. Do it now while you’re young!

  15. Hey Josh, I left a comment here about a month ago, and i decided to buy p90x. Since starting the program 2 weeks ago, I have strangely grown about 1/4″ lost 5 lbs, and gotten MUCH MUCH stronger, WITHOUT following the nutriton guide. People are already telling me, “wow your looking alot thinner” which is boosting my self confidence a lot. To everybody thinking about buying this. GO BUY IT, it was one of my greatest decisions

  16. @Matt. You will hit a plateau very shortly if you don’t follow the Nutrition Guide bro! Trust me, diet makes up about 80% of your results!

  17. I just turned 15, i’m about 6’1, 6’2 and i’m considering on buying p90x. I’m currently injured with a fractured back. I plan to do p90x in the summer, hopefully by then i’ll be healed up. Will it stun my growth? I want to be ready for football next year, do you recomend this?

  18. @John. Working out causing stunted growth is a myth.

hey im turning 15 in june i play tennis and soccer im planing to do p90x i weight about 123pounds, im skinni and have some muscles, should i do it following the nutrition guide and everithing, will it affect my growth?

  20. Matthew /

How do i get the nutriton plan? I lost it i think, but today is my first day on p90x and im worried because i dont know how long or how much to do a day. Or what should I eat. help me out.

  21. Trevor /

Hi, I am 14 years old I am 14 years old 5’2 and about 100lbs. I am very athletic toned but yet thin. I don’t know if this workout would affect my growth and if I should keep doing it.

  22. @Trevor. Working out affecting your growth is a myth. However, you still need to talk to your doctor and make sure the program is right for you or not.

  23. @Matthew. You probably won’t be able to get the Nutrition Guide, but you might want to contact Beachbody customer service to find out for sure or not. I don’t create meal plans for individuals.

  24. @Pato. Working out affecting your growth is a myth. However, you still want to check with your doctor to make sure the program is right for you or not. If you’re approved to start the workouts, it’s important that you follow the program how it’s set up, including the diet.

i am a 13 year old girl that weights about 175lbs. my father showed me p90x, i liked it, but not sure if im too young to do it.

  26. Kandie /

So. I’m 18 years old, 100 pounds. I’m skinny but my stomache is pretty fat, it’s not toned. I was wondering if p90x will help tone my stomache – maybe to abs? Alot of my friends have been telling me the p90x ab workout will be a good choice. I’m hoping to only get abs, not muscles and not planning on losing that much weight. Will p90x’s ab workout be a good workout for me?

  27. @Kandie. Doing just an ab routine isn’t going to do the job. You have to work the entire body and stick with a healthy diet if you want to get into shape and see the abs. That’s why P90X is so effective.

  28. @Kezandra. That’s something you will have to talk to your doctor about.

  29. Kandie /

Okay thanks! I will be starting p90x in April.

  30. Jennifer /

  31. @Jennifer. That would be something you would have to talk to your doctor about since you’re so young.

  32. Ronnie /

    Hey,
so i am 15 years old and weigh about 160 and i am 5 foot 4…. i am pretty athletic but have never done weight intensive training like this….(i swim)… do you think p90x is good for me?

  33. @Ronnie. YES! However, you want to check with your doctor first since you’re just 15. I do wish this program was around when I was your age, though.

  34. nelson /

  35. @Nelson. P90X is not a mass gaining program, but you can make some adjustments in order for it to be.

  36. Hey I’m 12 and I wanna get srtronger. I am going iinto seventh grade next year and there will be sports try outs. I wanna get stronger. Also I knda want a six pack because a lot of my friends have on and I want one too. I alredy have the program so should I do it?

  38. Alec /

im 15 years old and weigh about 135, give or take a couple pounds or so. and i’m around 5’4″ or 5’5″ and not really athletic. i was just wondering if P90X is good for me because i’ve been trying to work out since i was 14 but i could never stick to it. i’ve considered P90X for some time now and i was just wondering if it’ll give me the results i need. i’m not fat but not thin either. i’m average build but from what im eating and my laziness, i’m afraid i’ll live a life of being overweight. so what do ya think?

  39. Josh /

@Alec. I think P90X would be great for you, but it’s something you’re going to have to talk to your doctor and parents about.

  40. Yashar /

    Hey,

Im 13, 5 foot 8, 135 lbs, i do a lot of sports, one of them with 14-16 year olds, every male in my family has done P90X and my cousin gave me his DVD’s, i have all the equipments and i work out whenever i get a chance, i want to try the program but i wont be able to do it everyday or follow the nutrition plan or even do all the workouts, just a some of the useful ones, i already run over 30 km/week for soccer so i dont need the cardio x or plyo x, do you think i should give p90x a try?

  41. Josh /

@Yashar. That’s up to you bud. If anything, you can at least mix in a few P90X workouts here and there. However, you’re going to want to make sure it’s alright with your parents first since you’re so young.

  42. nolan /

  44. Daniel /

I’m 13 I play sports i am athletic and have done many minor workouts and some different intense workouts. Would p90x work for me?

  45. Josh /

@Daniel. I think so, but since you’re so young, you’re going to have to talk to your parents and doctor to see if it’s a good program for you.

  46. I’m 14 going to 15 Octobre I’m 6’3″ weigh 184 pounds I’m athletic and have been doing P90X for the past 2 months. I was just wondering if P90X will stunt my growth in anyway because I play basketball and height is key.

  47. Josh /

@Kevin. That’s a myth bud. Check with your doctor just to make sure, but I’ve never heard of it stunting anyone’s growth.

  48. Christian /

    Hi,
My friend was telling me about this, I looked into it and I’m interested. But I’m only 11, I’m very athletic playing football and basketball my hole life. I’m about 90 pounds almost 5′. I was wondering if I was eligable for P90X.

  49. Josh /
