Gain Mass With P90X: Part 2

I wanted to expand a little more on the earlier post called “Gain Mass With P90X.” However, in this post I’m going to focus on just one section of the last post, and that’s pre and post workout nutrition and supplements. I have been getting a lot of questions about this recently, so hopefully this clears things up, and really helps you all have a better understanding on how to gain mass.

One of the most important aspects of gaining mass with p90x is taking in the right pre and post workout supplements and nutrition. Let’s start with what to take pre-workout. Lately, I have been using a new supplement called Jack3d, which increases energy and maximizes pumps during the workouts, helping you get more reps and workout longer, which leads to mass gain over time. I used to take NO-Explode, which is a great supplement, but I feel that Jack3d is much better. I mix 2 scoops of it with some water and take it about 35 minutes before my workout. I also take creatine monohydrate powder about 35 minutes pre-workout as well. I mix 5g with 8oz. of 100% Natural Grape Juice. The reason for the grape juice is because it’s very important to take in fast digesting carbs (fruit juice) along with the creatine in order to transport the creatine to the muscle cells quickly. I have done many posts about creatine, and you can read them by looking in the “Supplements” section of this site, but to sum it all up, creatine gives you more energy, reduces fatigue, and helps with post-workout recovery.

Immediately following the workout, it’s important to take in about 40g of protein and 50-90g of simple carbs in order for proper recovery. The P90X Recovery Drink is perfect to take post-workout because of the 4:1 carb to protein ratio, and has other ingredients that are very important for proper recovery. About an hour later I will eat dinner, which consists of 2-3 servings of complex carbs if it’s after a resistance workout. If I have a little bit of fat that I need to lose, then I will cut the carbs on cardio days.

I am only 16 yrs old. Do you think the P90x recovery drink that comes with the P90x peak result package would be ok for me to gain mass? or am i too young to drink and i wont get the right results

  2. Josh /

@Matthew. I don’t see a problem with it, but you need to always check with your doctor before beginning any supplement.

Hey, I’m 5’10” and weighed around 145 at the start of the program. I’ve finished the first phase, and have lost about 6 pounds, mostly fat. I’ve noticed an increase in strength in the workouts and have been following the diet rigorously. I have a few questions. The first is, is it okay to stray from the diet for about one meal a week? If I had pizza or something? I haven’t yet, but I’m worried if I don’t eat anything like that, at the end of the program I’d eat more of it than I usually would. Although I’m planning on doing multiple rounds of p90x. Second, I want to see more definition, and get a 6-pack. I’m at 13.8% bodyfat. But I also want to gain muscle size. How should I do this? Am I at a low enough body fat that I should go ahead and try to gain mass? How many calories should I eat if that’s the case? It seems like the nutrition guide caters to losing weight rather than gaining. Since I’ve followed it and I’ve lost 6 pounds. I guess what I’m asking is, should I take creatine/protein supplements like I am, and do sets that burn out around 8-10 to achieve my goals? Will I also become more toned and defined? Or should I just gain muscle and with it, fat. Then do a round of p90x to cut the fat. I realize the goals kind of conflict with each other, but I want larger muscles, but also want them to be defined.

Should I take creatine before or after my workout?
    Thanks

@Chris. First of all, if you want me to continue answering your questions, you need to make me your coach, and here is the link to do so: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/47458

    To answer your questions..

    (1) No, it’s not OK. Follow the Nutrition Guide strictly.
    (2) Just follow the program man!
    (3) You can find what supplements I use and recommend in the “Q&A” section of this site.

Hey josh (different Chris here haha)
I click on the links you give to make you my coach and it doesn’t do anything. Just takes me to my home page.

  6. First off, thanks for the time and dedication you put forward for this invaluable info.

Secondly, I just wanna make sure I’m doing this right. In the 2nd phase right now. I did the fat shredder diet for phase 1 and lost 10 lbs. I’m happy with my weight. Abs look good 🙂 5’5 120. I’m not looking for mass, as I imagine I would gain weight from the extra calories and carbs. I’m looking to get cut and maintain skinniness. Was thinking of following the “Endurance Maximizer” diet of 20-20-60 fpc for the next 2 phases in order to get cut and maintaining the 1440-1500 calories the whole time.

    Is this your best recommendation?

  7. Josh /

@Ian. 1,400-1,500 cals is pretty low. You might want to increase that to at least 1,800-2,000, if not more. Also, the Endurance Maximizer is a good phase to follow.

Also, have you made me your coach yet? If not, you can do so by clicking on this link: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/47458

Hey Coach, I was looking to gain mass and I had a few questions.

First, what type of cardio workouts should i be doing and how often each week?

Second, should i keep the calories the same as the resistance days except just do a 20/40/40 ratio?

Third- On the creatine should I be doing 5g before and after? Or should I just do the 2.5g before and after? And one more question, (sorry) but would i take creatine on cardio days as well?

    Thanks for all the help.

  9. Josh /

@Mike. I would stick with HIIT workouts once or twice a week. I’m trying to put back on a little mass, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m doing the Insanity workouts on my cardio days. Also, yeah, keep the cals the same. Last, when I was using creatine, I was taking 2.5g pre and post workout.

Also, am I your coach? If not, you can make me your coach by clicking on this link: https://teambeachbody.com/signup/-/signup/free/47458

  10. Mike /

But won’t doing a workout like insanity prevent me from gaining muscle? Wouldn’t a cardio like kenpo be better to preserve muscle?

And also, would I be taking creatine on off days as well? And if so, when would I be taking it?

  11. Josh /

@Mike. It won’t prevent you from losing muscle if you’re eating properly and taking in the right pre and post workout supplements. Also, when I was taking creatine, I was taking it only on training days.

  12. Mike /

Oh ok, thanks. I was wondering about something since I’m about to start gaining mass with P90x. This is going to be my 3rd round of P90x and the first two rounds I was just solely trying to lose weight but now I’m going to start gaining mass.

So my question is, won’t my gains be slow because I’ve already done two rounds of P90x and my body is already used to all the workouts? Some insight would be helpful. Thanks coach.

  13. Josh /

@Mike. You need to read “Gain Mass With P90X: Part 1,” where you will find the answer to that.

  14. Travis /

is it ok to take out plyo, and yoga, and add in HIIT instead?

    Thanks.

  15. @Travis. That should be fine for Plyos, just as long as it’s more intense, but not for Yoga. There are a ton of benefits of Yoga, and you should incorporate it into your routine.

  16. Travis /

Ok ill keep the yoga in then. And you said u added in p90x plus workouts to p90x resistance right? so are the p90x plus workotus HIIT and are they more instense? and which one is more instense and which one do u recommend i switch with plyo? interval x or kenpo plus? which one did u switch plyo with? or did u alternate between the two each week?

    thanks.

  17. @Travis. If you’re looking to gain mass, you want to cut back on the cardio. P90X Plus cardio workouts are more intense than the P90X cardio workouts, and you can switch Plyos with Interval X Plus.

  18. Travis /

yeah i was only gonna do one cardio day a week which was for plyos but i didnt know which one i should switch with it. so is that what u did? u switched plyos with interval x plus? did u ever switch it with kenpo plus or do u recommend switching it with kenpo plus? or did u ever alternate the two or just switch it with interval x plux?

    thanks.

  19. @Travis. Yeah, I used one of the Insanity or P90X Plus workouts for my cardio exercise. However, since I’ve started Insanity, I haven’t used the P90X Plus workouts too much. Insanity is much more intense.

  20. Travis /

yeah but which p90x plus cardio workout did u use ur second round when u wanted to gain mass. which one did u use mostly to switch with plyo? or did u alternate between the two?

  21. @Travis. I used the P90X Plus cardios. I just alternated.

  22. Travis /

ok ill do that then. and which one do u think is more intense out of the two p90x plus cardio workouts?

    thanks.

  23. @Travis. Interval X Plus.

  24. Travis /

Ok i might just switch that one with plyos then. Are both the p90x plus cardio workouts HIIT, or just the interval one is, and the kenpo is more cardio?

    thanks.

  25. @Travis. Hey man from now on could you please ask your questions in one comment? I would appreciate it. Anyways, HIIT is a cardio workout bro. They are both high intensity and cardio workouts.

  26. Travis /

haha yeah sry about that. ill now just comment on that other post then. and i highly appreciate u taking the time and patience to answer all my questions. they help out alot! and again sry for all the questions. i just wanna do everything right, and do everything like u did to get just like u! 🙂 so sry ounce again and thanks for all the answers!

  27. Hey josh, i am 15 and i am on day 66 of p90x. I have lost 10 lbs. 165 to 155. I have followed the diet 100% for the 66 days. But recently my father has been telling me im getting to skinny. I have gotten alot stronger through. Im around 6 foot 1. How should i modify my diet to start gaining more weight. Thanks in advance.

  28. @Mike. You will need to increase the calories and follow what I recommend in the “Gain Mass With P90X” posts. However, with you being so young, you want to check with your doctor first and make sure everything is OK to follow.

  29. Hey Josh, I’ve heard that fruits are considered simple carbs but I’ve been reading a bit on that and I found out that bananas are somewhat considered a complex carb. I’ve been using banana’s in my post workout shake to get some simple cabrs. what do you think? simple or complex? and should I keep using it?

  30. @Jose. All fruits are simple carbs, but they contain natural sugar, which is much different than the processed sugar you find in candy. How come you don’t use the Recovery Formula? It contains all the simple carbs you need, plus other ingredients to aid in proper recovery. If you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure you do so because it’s the best post-workout drink I’ve used.

  31. I am still confused about the recovery drink. You say you should have 40g of protien and 50-90g of simple carbs yet the recovery drink only has 10g of protein and 40g of carbs. Are you getting the rest from your whey later and your meal. If so what do you eat for the extra simple carbs.

I have seen many people suggest the recovery drink yet go on to state needing higher amounts of protein and carbs. I am trying to figure out if everyone is supplementing the recovery drink and if so with what and when.

    Thanks,

  32. Josh /

@Ed. If you’re looking to gain mass, you can take a whey protein shake about 45 minutes after you take the Recovery Formula, boosting the protein.

  33. Carson /

Hey, so i started p90x 2 days ago. I’m a 16-year soon-to-be sophmore, and I’m reaaally skinny. 5’10, 120 lbs. And I started p90x to help gain weight, and make sure its gained as muscle mass, but then after doing plyometrics today i thought about it and i don’t see how that could help me gain weight, so i looked it up, was sent here by google and read your articles on p90x weight gain.Sooo, your saying i should up my cal intake to the 3500-4000 range and switch the plyos with something else? and if so, what? Any other tips to help me gain any weight at all would be awesome.

  34. Josh /

@Carson. Really, everything that you need to know about gaining mass with P90X is in these posts.

  35. Víctor /

It is necessary the creatine monohydrate powder, because Jack 3D includes creatine monohydrate. It is better Jack 3D Micro than the traditional one? Thanks

  36. Víctor /

By the way, I’m using MET Rx XTREME SIZE UP powder after workout, it’s the best powder I can find in my country (Colombia) What do you think about this powder? Thanks

  37. @Victor. I don’t recommend Jack3d anymore because of many controversial ingredients. I now use E&E pre-workout.

  38. @Victor. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about that!
