I wanted to expand a little more on the earlier post called “Gain Mass With P90X.” However, in this post I’m going to focus on just one section of the last post, and that’s pre and post workout nutrition and supplements. I have been getting a lot of questions about this recently, so hopefully this clears things up, and really helps you all have a better understanding on how to gain mass.
One of the most important aspects of gaining mass with p90x is taking in the right pre and post workout supplements and nutrition. Let’s start with what to take pre-workout. Lately, I have been using a new supplement called Jack3d, which increases energy and maximizes pumps during the workouts, helping you get more reps and workout longer, which leads to mass gain over time. I used to take NO-Explode, which is a great supplement, but I feel that Jack3d is much better. I mix 2 scoops of it with some water and take it about 35 minutes before my workout. I also take creatine monohydrate powder about 35 minutes pre-workout as well. I mix 5g with 8oz. of 100% Natural Grape Juice. The reason for the grape juice is because it’s very important to take in fast digesting carbs (fruit juice) along with the creatine in order to transport the creatine to the muscle cells quickly. I have done many posts about creatine, and you can read them by looking in the “Supplements” section of this site, but to sum it all up, creatine gives you more energy, reduces fatigue, and helps with post-workout recovery.
Immediately following the workout, it’s important to take in about 40g of protein and 50-90g of simple carbs in order for proper recovery. The P90X Recovery Drink is perfect to take post-workout because of the 4:1 carb to protein ratio, and has other ingredients that are very important for proper recovery. About an hour later I will eat dinner, which consists of 2-3 servings of complex carbs if it’s after a resistance workout. If I have a little bit of fat that I need to lose, then I will cut the carbs on cardio days.
