P90X for Baseball

The other day I met up with a former baseball teammate of mine who decided to become a Beachbody Coach, and one of the things we talked about was how much we wished we would have had P90X back when we were playing ball. In high school and college, we had great coaching, but we didn’t have the knowledge about supplements, nutrition, and workouts that we do now, and looking back, we could have improved our game drastically if we would have. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, but that doesn’t mean we can’t impact the up and coming baseball players, helping them improve their athletic performance.

For those of you who don’t know, I was a baseball player from the time I was 5 until I graduated college. I didn’t become serious with baseball, though, until I was 12, when I joined my first traveling team. Traveling ball opened my eyes and showed me the talent that was all across the U.S., and it also opened up some doors for some excellent training, like from David Eckstein’s hitting coach. I worked hard every single day to improve my game, but there was always one area that was lacking, and that’s the nutrition and working out part. Don’t get me wrong, I worked out all the time, but now looking back, I wasn’t doing the right things I needed to be doing. My workouts from the time I was 15 until college consisted of the same exact routine, but with heavier weights as I got older of course. What happened was that I developed a very strong chest, biceps, and triceps, but had about zero flexibility with weak legs, back, and core. On top of that, my diet was absolutely terrible. Seriously, it consisted of white bread, fried chicken fingers, french fries, spaghetti, Toaster Strudels, ice cream, and pizza. I absolutely hated anything green or healthy for me. The only reason I wasn’t 50 lbs overweight was because I was still lifting and active at least 8 hours of the day from baseball. I didn’t know better then, but now I realize just how much a bad diet affected my performance.

When I graduated college and got a real job, I gained a ton of weight very quickly because I maintained my terrible eating habits and stopped working out as much. It came to a point where I hit rock bottom and needed to make a change, and that’s when I found P90X. If you don’t know, P90X is a complete diet and exercise program, and it allowed me to lose 25 lbs and 10% body fat in 90 days. I was literally in the best shape of my life! I started doing research on why I got into the best shape of my life, and it was because of the combination of a healthy diet and the muscle confusion and unique exercises that are involved with P90X. There is no hitting a plateau because every single month they switch up the routines, allowing you to continue seeing results. All of those areas that I neglected before were now developed, and my body was balanced, something very important for success in baseball.

When I think about the most important factors in athletic performance, especially in baseball, they are leg strength, core strength, and ability to maintain energy, something you can’t do with an unhealthy diet. Unfortunately, the majority of high school and even college coaches COMPLETELY neglect the nutrition aspect of performance, and that’s why I’m always recommending P90X to players because it gets them on a healthy diet schedule. You can’t go out and have enough energy to play a triple header if you are taking in crap food like pizza and burgers. You have to have a well balanced, healthy meal that allows you to sustain energy throughout the day. The Nutrition Guide allows you to do just that. Plus, the workouts allow you to develop each part of your body, and there’s no doubt that you will be able to run faster, jump higher, and become stronger after completing the program.

There is no doubt that I am in much better shape now and at an overall better athletic performance now than I was when I was playing baseball.     I’ve had the same exact thoughts about my college baseball career. Wish I’d had P90X and Insanity in those days! I did well in college baseball, but I always wonder how much better I could have been with better training and nutrition. Like you said, hindsight is 20/20.

  4. P90x would have been awesome back in my high school days. I was scrawny and didn’t participate in sports at all; P90x would have opened a lot of doors for me at the time. My sons have a big advantage because they know how to get fit for the sports they like to play.
